Music In Schools

April 13th, 2006

Just received this from the Atlanta Chapter of The Recording Academy - please read and forward the message along.

Growing up in Orchestra in my public schools inspired me to get into the music industry and while I was younger, offered me a form to express myself while not being forced to be an athlete or the top academic of my class. It opened me up to so much and I’d hate for the youth in Atlanta to not have the same opportunity. This would mean 52 area elementary schools without music. Can you imagine that? Get rid of Science. Just because it’s creative doesn’t mean it’s not vital.

The Fulton County School Board recently voted to eliminate music programs
from all area elementary schools. The Atlanta Chapter of The Recording
Academy believes this is a misguided action that will have disastrous
ramifications for our area students.

We need your help. Please click on the link below and send letters to the
members of the Fulton County School Board, asking them to keep music
education in their elementary schools. Your letter will be emailed to each
School Board member, and we will also hand deliver copies of our Chapter
members’ letters at the next School Board meeting.

Thank you for your support of music education.
Jan Smith, Chapter President
Michele Caplinger, Chapter Executive Director

It’s depressing to know that not only will children not have the outlet, but that there are a ton of teachers (and some in training) who won’t have jobs. I was in orchestra, as well, and I don’t know what I would’ve done without it.

Yeah it’s really depressing. I can’t believe after all the hype music was getting for furthering the development of children’s learning habits, etc that this is still happening across the US.

    Thanks for reposting Greg!
