I stumbled on a new site through a local music community I read and can definitely see this becoming addictive already. (Oh no MySpace - you hear that?)
It’s called La La. ‘lala.com’ works like an online music co-op where members trade-in CDs they have for CDs they want from other members. CDs are sent through the mail in pre-paid envelopes provided by ‘la la’. “Trading CDs is an affordable way to experiment and try new music,” said Bill Nguyen, ‘la la’ co-founder. Basically the Netflix of music except you get to keep what ya get. If an album is not immediately available for trade, members will be able to buy the CD new or as a digital download at retail prices.
One of the coolest things about the service is that while there is no obligation to do so, ‘la la’ is setting aside 20% of trading revenues for musicians. (Up until now, to my knowledge, there has been no way for artists to make any money whatsoever off the sale of used cds.)
It’s only $1 a cd and shipping is 49 cents for each cd. (DAMN CHEAP!) Here’s how it works according to the site.
They also have a plugin similar to Audioscrobbler’s Last.FM, that tracks what you listen to in order to help you find music you may be interested in. (I can’t get the Mac iTunes plugin to install though… I contacted them for help)
(I knew the founder’s names looked familiar too… especially Bill Nguyen. He’s quite the buzz in the technology world.)
P.S. The only way you can join is by an invite link… shhh!

Thanks for the tip. I just sign-up and posted about 40 CDs. 12 of them are being requested! I feel so much better about my musical taste. I’ll post more CDs tomorrow.
