“Mobile internet users in Decatur will soon be able to order their lattes to go.
The four-square mile city is building an outdoor wireless internet network that will allow access in the town square, in parks, at curb-side benches and even on residential porches — freeing laptop luggers from internet “hotspots” like the local coffee shop.
Decatur will be the first community in metro Atlanta to deploy a citywide Wi-Fi network, state officials said.”
This is the best news I’ve heard all month. Leave it to alternatively-minded, progressive Decatur to jump on the bandwagon before Atlanta could implement a network. Anyone in Decatur need a tenant? (I joke.) “It’s very, very exciting,” said Andrea Arnold, the assistant city manager. “I think it just says a lot about Decatur — that we’re willing to do something that’s new and innovative.” Exactly!
Decatur is following cities across the country including (some random ones such as) Chaska, Minn. and Corpus Christi, Texas in implementing such networks, which you’ll be able to take advantage of, similiar to a utility, with a monthly fee for service.
Earthlink announced back at the end of January that they would be building, owning and operating a municipal wireless network in Atlanta but there hasn’t been much news since then…

I believe downtown Athens has a network like this too. I think it’s affiliated with UGA, but I’m not sure.
