Monday night, the Scion Independent Film Series will be presenting “Bling: A Planet Rock” for FREE with RSVP at Center Stage at the CW Complex on W. Peachtree at 8pm.

Synopsis:
This 90-minute documentary takes a hard-hitting look at how the flashy world of commercial hip hop played a significant role in the 10-year civil war in Sierra Leone, West Africa. BLING follows three hip-hop celebrities: Raekwon (Wu Tang Klan), Paul Wall and Reggaetón king, Tego Calderon. They visit the capital of Freetown where they survey the devastated country, meet the hip hop community, as well as encounter refugees and former child soldiers first hand.
The Director:
Raquel Cepeda is an award-winning editor and multi-media journalist, and filmmaker. She lives in New York City.
I went last month to their screening of “The Mayor Of Sunset Strip” which was pretty cool and included Q&A with the director (who also directed one of my favorite films of the year, “Factory Girl”). A little poorly attended which just meant a more private showing and 30 of my fellow strangers. I expect this month to be a bit better.
Be sure to RSVP cause it’s free and it’s the beginning of the month which means that bills are due.
