Beep Beep Gallery presents “Majestic Hours,” a collaborative show between Sam Parker and Joe Tsambiras, opening this Saturday and running through December 2.
Over the course of a year, Sam and Joe have been meeting at The Majestic Diner, a 24 hour diner located in the heart of Atlanta. Playing off of the Exquisite Corpse exercise made famous by the Surrealists, the two began passing drawings back and forth, integrating and even altering each others styles and influences.
During this time they’ve completed over 75 collaborative drawings, all of which will make their appearance during the November show at Beep Beep, as well as in a book that the two artists have created to chronicle this period of exchange.
Here’s Sam’s take on the project:
Joe and I started meeting more frequently at the Majestic sometimes spending 10 or 15 hours a week there drinking coffee, drawing and talking about ideas. The work started taking shape. Both of us were elated by the elaborations that the work was taking. We seemed to be forming this dialog of narrative images that seemed to grow in there richness as our friendship grew. In many of my past collaborations the method and image bank would dry up at some point and become stale and the work would loose the vitality that collaboration can be. On the contrary we continued to add new imagery from other source material (Picasso, 18th century etchings, modern fonts, medieval armor, etc.) and it naturally assimilated into the work.
