It’s that time of year again, when Atlanta braces itself for a head-on collision between music and gluttony. What began as a modest one day line up of local music and corndog related antics has become a two day, two stage, self described “music festival, block party carnival, county fair freak show.”
Corndogorama will go from noon to 11 PM this Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28 on the streets of East Atlanta Village. For $15 a day (it’s too late to purchase the $20 two day pass) attendees get to enjoy 50 bands from Atlanta, Athens, and around the Southeast plus plenty of shenanigans including a World’s Strongest Man Contest, Tricycle Race, the first ever Corndogorama Mustache Contest, and of course, a corndog eating competition. Of all of the great bands lined up, here are some of the bands that I’m looking forward to seeing on day one.
12:45 PM
Attractive Eighties Women – Main Stage
This “comedy-core” outfit plays classic rock and punk influenced songs with titles such as “They Shoot Hipsters Don’t They?”, “Surfing or Aids (I’ll Take Surfing)”, and “Master Cylinder” — an ode to 24 ounce cans of PBR. Count on general absurdity and creative stage hijinks.
4:35 PM
Thy Mighty Contract – Main Stage
One of my new favorite bands plays a propulsive and angular brand of punk. Members of The Orphins, Blame Game and I Would Set Myself on Fire for You come together and curiously cite pop and black metal as influences. Expect intricate dueling guitars, abrupt rhythmic changes, and female vocals that range from abrasive to angelic.
8:45 PM
The Judies – Main Stage
If you’re looking for piano-driven theater pop with shameless rockstar attitude, there is no better in Atlanta. Dynamic and dramatic, The Judies put on an entertaining show, if not coming across as a bit over the top.
Other bands of interest include new wave/rock duo Sealions at 5:00 PM on Second Stage, Wizard Smoke (a metal band consisting of current and former members of Maserati, Attractive Eighties Women, Cassavetes, and Dust Rabbit) at 5:20 PM on Main Stage, dance funk spectacle Noot d’ Noot at 8:10 PM on Main Stage, and Modern Skirts coming off of a Friday night Athfest gig playing 10:00 PM on Main Stage.
