With his surrealist aesthetic and eccentric lifestyle, Salvador Dali was never one to fade away unnoticed. Which is why the High Museum’s 31-hour going away party for Dali: The Late Work is perhaps the most apropos way to send the exhibit off in Dali-like grandeur.

Beginning at 10 a.m. this Saturday, “Dali ’til Dawn” not only offers one last chance to see some of the famed Spanish artist’s later works (including the bleak landscape and melting clocks of “The Persistence of Memory,” which was just added to the show in November), but also includes performance artists, DJs, film screenings and other ways to enhance the already enriching subject matter.

Local art advocacy collective WonderRoot will host performances that encourage audience participation and input. The Imperial Opa will perform theatrical sideshow-like feats in keeping with the spirit of Dali. Chamber musicians, art making workshops for kids, a dance party with DJ Heart Disease and an appearance by Melissa Carter from Q100’s The Bert Show will also be part of the phantasmagorical fun.

For the insomniacs arriving for the late-night festivities, admission is only $5 for non-museum members from midnight-9 a.m., and parking is free from midnight to 6 a.m.

Upcoming flick Law Abiding Citizen will be out on October 16 but you have the opportunity to catch it before the rest of the public. Drive A Faster Car is presenting a screening on Monday, October 12, especially for DaFC readers!

Follow the jump for more on the movie and how to win passes!

Synopsis:

Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is an upstanding family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice.

Fast forward ten years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton coolly admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system that failed his family, or key players in the trial will die.

Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Philadelphia is gripped with fear as Shelton’s high-profile targets are slain one after another and the authorities are powerless to halt his reign of terror. Only Nick can stop the killing, and to do so he must outwit this brilliant sociopath in a harrowing contest of wills in which even the smallest misstep means death. With his own family now in Shelton’s crosshairs, Nick finds himself in a desperate race against time facing a deadly adversary who seems always to be one step ahead.

De Lama Lamina

Set in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil during Carnaval 2004, this film/performance collaboration with avant-garde musician Arto Lindsay is further evidence of Barney’s continuing fascination with “biomechanical erotica.” Barney says, “De Lama Lamina” is a meditation on the creative process . . . Candomble . . . became a catalyst for finding a way to express a faith in the balances in nature . . . and through this faith being able to look at the world today without feeling hopeless.” 45 minutes

John Otte — Sugar & Shit (Stephan/Polidori Remix), 2009, Collage

Summer is slowly beginning the process of giving way to Fall. In this temporary “hit & run” installation, John Otte seeks to meditate on the ongoing collapse and erosion of many previously considered “stable” systems, both locally and globally, thus making way for other arrangements and different forms.

In an ongoing exploration of creative destruction, Otte employs photography, text, collage, sculpture, and film sources creating porous abstractions where systems collide, contaminate, and overlap one another, forming strange new hybrids and mutations – an uncertain world where fact and fiction are inextricably bound, “beautiful things grow out of shit . . . things evolve out of nothing,” and “everything disappears.”

John Otte, is well known in Atlanta as an artist, DJ, and curator. His multi-disciplinary work is primarily abstract, containing numerous references to the body, music, architecture, and landscape.
