There was a fantastic vein of 90s pop music where power pop met alternative rock and Geffen was God. Bright Brit-like vocals and melodies paired with grungy loud guitars that were friendly enough for both your parents and your local college radio station. They went by names like Matthew Sweet and Teenage Fanclub.

A little band from Ohio, The Posies, came to the scene in 1988 when Jonathan Auer and Ken Stringfellow began recording together, releasing an indie cassette and receiving the attention of DGC (a Geffen label). Auer and Stringfellow led The Posies through eight releases, including Blood/Candy, released September of this year, in addition to numerous solo records and side projects, including a stint backing up cult act Big Star.

Brendan Benson, most recently recognized as a quarter of The Raconteurs, also has a notable track record of four swoonworthy albums under his belt including one of my favorite 90s pop discs, One Mississippi. His more recent releases take a more mature direction while staying consistent in his trademark likable pop melodies and perfect pop lyrics. Barsuk baby, Aqueduct, opens the show.
