My mother and I bought tickets to see Leonard Cohen in Atlanta back in July during the pre-sale — keep reading for how to have the opportunity to see him live yourself.

Cohen is back on the road in support of his upcoming live CD/DVD release featuring his performance at The Isle Of Wight music festival in the summer of 1970. The new, beautiful film documentary by Lerner features interviews with fellow festival performers, as well as Cohen’s full performance on CD. All tracks are previously unreleased (sans bits of “Suzanne” which were featured in the documentary Message to Love, also by Lerner). Included are live versions of classic songs from the first two Leonard Cohen LPs: “So Long, Marianne,” “The Stranger Song,” “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye,” “Suzanne,” “Bird On The Wire,” “You Know Who I Am,” and “The Partisan” as well as spoken word and poetry.

The Dodos are a wonderful example of a band that doesn’t want to reinvent the wheel just to have an individual sound. Logan Kroeber prefers his drum kit sans kick drum which compliments their new presumably full-time member on vibraphone, Keaton Snyder, very well. Acoustic guitar player and vocalist Meric Long will inevitably earn them some attention from critics hoping for a folk resurgence but this band’s sound is far closer to some version of Animal Collective than Nick Drake.

The production should have a familiar ring to it since Phil Ek is at the helm. It smacks of Fleet Foxes, Built to Spill, The Shins and Band of Horses. While these records all share his personal touch, it’s certainly still a Dodos record, even if some of the aggressiveness might have been dialed back a bit. The vocals sit right on top of the mix throughout most of the record giving it a highly melodic quality. The record almost sounds timeless and will most likely age quite well.

Following up Visiter which turned heads all over the world just last year, Time To Die seems like an inevitable record but released surprisingly quick. Many groups spend much more time writing, recording, and releasing a record of this quality. It’s certainly worth a listen if you follow any of the bands mentioned in this review. They all seem to reflect something about the end of our decade.

Art Brut may sound like a one trick pony upon first listen but throughout their last three records, they’ve showed both a consistency and a willingness to tinker with the sound. While the first record Bang Bang Rock & Roll laid the blueprint for what the band wasn’t. It’s A Bit Complicated demonstrated a willingness to retain the personality and incorporate a greater pop aesthetic. Art Brut Vs. Satan finds the band even further down this road with songs that display subtle pop hooks so clever, you might even find non-music listeners asking who you’re listening to.

Good for a mixtape and gets better on repeated listens, Art Brut Vs. Satan seems like their most mature record to date. Reduced are the excessively repetitive lyrics with more focus on the double lead guitar backing up the bass melody on most songs. Of course, it goes without saying that Art Brut has taken cues from The Clash and Gang Of Four and may even be considered the Brit version of America’s The Hold Steady. With a confessional verse followed by a sing-along chorus.

Art Brut’s fans will certainly be happy with this one and may make some new fans too. It’s melodic, individual, earnest and sincere. If you have a few extra bucks and hit the record store, it will be hard to pass up.
